For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.
Lol. Yay. What James has to say to the twelve tribes …and by extension, all of us, is 2 Dear brothers and sisters,a when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. 3For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. 4So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.
When we can fully endure … we will need nothing. We will be perfect. Hm. Perfection .. is found in the ability to endure.
Later he says:
12Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
When we endure the hardship, or pass the tests, that is when we are fulfilling our calling.
The hardships will never end until the new world comes into being. (Revelations 21 : 1Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,”a for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’b or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Then, with this new world in place, the chapter continues: 5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”
So! As verse 6-7 say, those of us who endure will receive water from the spring of the water of life. Those who are Victorious inherit this and will be God’s children. Eternal life!
He goes on to say that those who are not victorious, are actually cowardly, unbelieving and so on. These will die the second death.
Wow! May we all endure! And encourage each other as in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 – Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Side Note: Earlier in 1 Thessalonians 5 we read this: 4But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.5You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
